Is the divorce rate in America really dropping?

| Dec 6, 2018 | Divorce |

For decades most people in New Jersey have heard the common refrain that approximately 50 percent of all marriages in America end in a divorce. However, a recent report noted that this is not actually true anymore. Is the divorce rate in America really dropping?

The recent report posted statistics to show that, nowadays, the real percentage of marriages that end in divorce is more like 39 percent, not 50 percent. If that is true, that represents a significant decrease in the number of divorces that are happening throughout the country, including in New Jersey. But, what is causing the number of divorces in America to decrease?

Well, according to the recent report, at least one of the possible reasons is that young people — particularly so-called “millennials” — are waiting longer to get married in the first place. It may be that they are being more selective about who they marry, being perhaps less impulsive than generations past have been, but also perhaps because they want to be more financially secure before they chose a lifelong mate.

Regardless of whether the divorce rate in America is dropping, each year there will be thousands of New Jersey residents who find themselves going through the divorce process. As these individuals and families will come to realize, there are many different divorce legal issues that need to be addressed when ending their marriage. When anyone finds themselves among the, now, 39 percent of couples who go through a divorce, they will want to get the best information about their own unique legal circumstances.
