Why do you need a prenup?

New Jersey couples like you aspire for long, healthy relationships. But many of us understand that this does not always happen. If you get a divorce, the ramifications can last throughout the following years. A prenuptial agreement, or prenup, helps mitigate that damage.

But what are the exact reasons you may want a prenup? In what ways can a prenup help you out?

Increase in prenups

The Business Insider says millennials sign more prenups than past generations. There are many reasons experts speculate this happens. For one, many millennials come from households of divorce. You may have seen your parents or the parents of loved ones go through a messy split.

In general, people are choosing to marry later, too. The later you marry, the more assets you have. You do not want to risk the possibility of a messy divorce if you have a lot to lose. Prenups help you maintain your assets even after a divorce. You can do this rather than risk the potential of losing it all.

The changing opinion of prenups

The stigma around prenups has changed greatly in recent years. At one point, prenups were something for the wealthy only. It was more common among older couples, or people getting remarried. If you did not fall into one of those categories, it may seem like you had no faith in your marriage working out. These days, you likely view it as a fail-safe. You understand marriages do not always work out. Getting a prenup is responsible, rather than a sign of pessimism.

In this way, a prenup can help protect your future. Even if your relationship and marriage do not work out, you will not have to risk losing everything.
