Choosing the right divorce mediator

On Behalf of | Sep 19, 2023 | Divorce

If you live in New Jersey and are going through a divorce, you and your spouse may want to consider mediation. This can be a more cooperative approach, but it is important that you choose the right person as mediator.

Qualifications

First, it is important to make sure that your divorce mediation is conducted by someone who has the right education and experience to be truly helpful. Examples of educational backgrounds that can be useful include law, psychology or child development. However, the person should also have more than a basic level of training in mediation and dispute resolution as well. Furthermore, look for someone who spends a majority of their time on mediation rather than someone who only does so occasionally.

Associations

In determining how much expertise an individual has in mediation, you can also look at their membership in professional organizations, such as the Academy of Professional Family Mediators. This demonstrates that they are part of a wider community. Publications, speaking engagements or a background in training other mediators also point to someone with a great deal of experience.

Personal feelings and cost

The most educated and experienced mediator in the world will not be able to help you if you do not feel comfortable with them. The process of mediation involves sharing personal details ranging from your feelings to your finances and more, so having a mediator you can trust and talk to is crucial for success. Similarly, you need to establish whether you can afford the mediator although simply choosing the cheapest option may not be wise.

The divorce process is often difficult, but a mediator can reduce conflict. Choosing the right one may be your first step in saving yourself additional time, money and stress.
