Is National Divorce Month a real thing?

Ending a marriage is no laughing matter, so New Jersey residents may be a bit taken aback by recent news headlines. National Divorce Month may sound like a joke, but many experts say there is some truth to the unofficial term. While certainly, there is no formally honored period in which to get a divorce, there are very real trends within the legal process that contribute to the tongue-in-cheek phrase.

Courts traditionally see an influx of divorce filings in January. Some people may be looking for a fresh start in the new year. Others may have planned to file for divorce for quite some time, but thought it better to wait until after the holiday season had passed.

While there are any number of reasons a person may choose to end a marriage, it is up to each individual to decide when the time is right. There is much to consider when planning to divorce. Finances, living arrangements, child custody and joint property are just a few of the matters that will have to be handled during divorce litigation. Even in a state like New Jersey where no-fault divorce is available, there is never a quick and painless way to end a marriage.

Many people find the legal process a bit daunting, and for good reason. Ending a marriage is often an emotional period, and it can be frightening to have to make important decisions about money, children and related matters. In such situations, a person may want to consult with an experienced attorney. An attorney can offer sound advice and help with a divorce any time of year, whenever a client is ready for a clean break and a fresh start.
