How common is divorce in America?

by | Oct 11, 2018 | Divorce

For decades now many people have said that it is common knowledge that the divorce rate in America is about 50 percent, meaning that half of all marriages end in divorce. But, is that really the case? How common is divorce in America?

A recent article took a look at the divorce rate and found that it may be more complicated to calculate than many people have traditionally thought. Why? Well, the statistics that are actually available regarding divorce in America is how many divorces are filed and finalized in any given year. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention keeps track of statistics on divorce – as strange as that might sound – and has found that in one recent year, 2016, there were 3.2 divorces per 1,000 people in America that year.

Unfortunately, those statistics may not tell us much about how common divorce actually is in America. The recent report noted that those statistics do not include data from six of the 50 states. Also, while it may seem obvious, not everyone is married. So, a divorce rate that is based on a per 1,000 people unit in a population isn’t actually all that representative of the number of divorces in America.

But, while it may be difficult to track just how common divorce in America really is, it is a reality that most of our readers probably know someone who has gone through a divorce or who is going through a divorce currently. Any divorce case can be difficult for all parties involved. To get through a divorce, New Jersey residents need to know their rights under the state’s family laws.
