Representation in high income child support disputes

by | Jun 15, 2018 | High Asset Divorce

A previous post on this blog from several months ago talked about how New Jersey law handles situations in which one or both parents make so much money that New Jersey’s Child Support Guidelines do not account for the full extent of their income. The basic idea of that post was that child support orders in such cases were more fluid and subject to a court’s discretion.

The upshot was that parents may have to be better prepared to argue their positions regarding child support to a judge instead of relying on a state-prescribed formula.

While most New Jersey residents won’t have to deal with such situations because they don’t make enough income, a surprising number of people in this state will have to deal with high income child support orders. For instance, if two parents both happen to be physicians, their household income can easily exceed the maximum amount contemplated in the child support guidelines.

These sorts of cases can be quite contentious, as recent news reports have demonstrated. As a result, someone who believes he or she will be involved in a high income child support dispute will be well advised to seek out the services of an experienced New Jersey family law attorney, such as those who work at our law office.

Our attorneys understand that just because a parent is well off, it doesn’t mean that their children don’t deserve the support of both parents. We will work hard to investigate a child support case thoroughly, especially when establishing support is going to involve making a commonsense argument to a judge or mediator. While we cannot guarantee a given result in a particular case, we have a track record of successfully helping high income parents achieve their child support goals.
